There is a single flower
Lying on your doorstep—
A single flower,
Red as desire.
You pick it up
With a tenderness like velvet—
A tenderness as soft
As a midsummer rain.
Attached to the stem
Is a handwritten note—
A note you read
With your now fervent eyes.
“This is my apology
For what I shall do;
This is my apology
For breaking your heart.”
The flower now drifts
Out of your hands—
Your cold, cold hands—
And onto the snow.
Red on white,
Blood on a canvas—
A canvas that once
Depicted your dreams.
Love can be tragic;
Lies are convincing—
Convincing enough
To bury the truth.

Thank you!
That last stanza is extremely powerful! Awesome
Thanks! I’m glad you think so!
Very nice!
Much thanks!
Very good soon-to-be classic!
Haha thank you, Liz! I wouldn’t say “classic”, exactly, but what flattering word choice

Love it, great writing!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Beautiful, thank you for sharing.
It’s my pleasure. Thank YOU for your support.
Yes, that last stanza – so, so true. I once received a red rose outside my door – but it was from someone who actually had loved me…but I didn’t give him the chance and let fear rule my heart.
Run, run away…it’s what I do best.
Thank you! And that’s so sad, but maybe it was for the best.
Achingly beautiful.
Thanks so much.
I like the bait-and-switch here.
Thank you, I’m glad to hear it! At first, I started out just writing this as your traditional love poem, but then I thought, “What if I switch things up a bit?” I think it turned out a lot better then it would have otherwise.
I like your style. Thanks for visiting my blog. Looking forward to reading more poems here.
You’re welcome! I’m glad you like my writing!
